Where were you?

9/11/01--We were in Moscow, Idaho, which is on Pacific Time, 3 hours different from Eastern. Mike and I have never turned the TV on in the morning, so we had no idea what was going on in the world. Mike called a friend at the IMB in Richmond, Virginia, to ask a question. He cheerfully asked, "Hey, how are you doing?" and the friend replied, "Well, we're all still in shock, and trying to locate all our personnel, make sure everyone is okay." Mike asked what he was talking about, and he told him what had happened. When Mike hung up, he turned to me with a face full of emotion and said, "Our country is under attack." My first thought was that he must be exaggerating, our country could never be under attack. Then he told me the details, and we turned on the TV with the rest of the nation. Where were you?

We were on furlough in Perrysburg, Ohio. I had just finished nursing Abby who was a little over a month old. I was watching the Today Show - Matt Lauer had just interviewed Tracy Ulman. My sister was coming over to hang out. Right after the interview Matt said that reports were coming in that possibly a small commuter plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. They showed live footage of the smoking building. Then you could see the shadow of the other plane hitting. People started to say that it wasn't a small plane but a huge airliner. The fact that two had hit was starting to feel like it was on purpose.

We sat and stared at the TV for hours. When I wasn't watching TV I stood at the window and watched the sky to see if something bad was coming.

I was asleep because I too was in Moscow, but as a student, and didn't have an early class. Jackie's mom actually called and woke us up. I answered the phone and could tell there was something wrong from her voice. Jackie and I turned on the TV and watched until we had to go to class. All of my classes were either cancelled that day or we watched coverage during them.

Hey! I was gonna tell that story! Good job though. I was really happy to be your roommate that morning, Alana, because you morphed into political analysis mode and I would have had no idea what to even think about all of it. You even mentioned Osama before the news guys did.

Most of my classes were also cancelled - except 'stress management' stragely enough...

I remember poor little Jeffy Gray walking over to us in the commons while we watched the big screen news footage and Desiree Rauch said Happy Birthday to him. Poor kid...Pretty much ruins a good day doesn't it?

We were in Conway, AR...Steve called from work and said "turn on the TV!" During some of the time that I was watching, Noah poured shampoo in the fish bowl which of course killed the fish. Isn't it interesting how we remember such specific things? I still remember walking down the hallway in high school when I heard about the space shuttle explosion, and being in Mrs. Busby's classroom in the 5th grade when the President was shot.

That's so funny--I was thinking of other things I remember clearly like that, and I remembered the space shuttle and Reagan, too! Also when we bombed Baghdad the first time in the first Gulf war. It was a Wednesday night, and my roommate and I were about to leave for church.
