Vicki Courtney in training?

I'm no Vicki Courtney, "author mom smack-dab in the trenches of teen culture," (you can and should visit her blog here) but I've noticed two disturbing things lately that made me think of what she would say or do about them, so I decided to say and do something myself!
The first is the latest Bath and Body Works advertising campaign. Have you been in the store lately??? Did you get the latest coupon in the mail??? That's a naked woman on there!! I honestly didn't even see the woman when I went in the store last Friday night, but when my husband walked in, he immediately turned his head, saying, "Holy smoke! It's a good thing the girls aren't in here!" I'm so thankful  for a husband who responds that way. But really, it just shows how visually sensitive men are; he's just very aware of temptation and his own weakness. He left the store, but I am ashamed to say that after complaining to the worker, I did go ahead and buy what I needed. I did just send an email to the corporation, though, telling them how I feel about it and that we will not buy anything else from there until they change the image. Sigh. I will miss my foaming hand soaps. You can do the same thing by clicking here.
The other thing I saw was an ad in our state newspaper for a "Total Makeover." I read it with interest, since I'm always wanting help with my hair, and a little fashion/make-up advice could definitely come in handy, too. (Can you nominate yourself for "What Not to Wear?") Then I read what the prize includes (I cut and pasted this from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette website): "The winner's total makeover will be revealed at the Arkansas Women's Show on June 12. One winner will receive the following: Hair, makeover and clothing from Dillard's, membership at fitness center for one month and one or a combination of the following (up to $500 value) Botox; Restylane; Sculptra; Dysport and Juvederm from The Cosmetic Surgery Center and Dr. Rhys Branman." Cosmetic surgery? Excuse me? So now a total makeover means surgery?! I had no idea! Now some women have physical needs due to accidents or debilitating disease, and I think it's wonderful that we live in an age where they can get surgery to restore them. But how sad that many women will sign up for this prize to try to be as perfect as the images they see in magazines or movies--false images that are totally unattainable! It's not easy to look in the mirror and thank our Creator; trust me, I see every frizzy hair, mole and freckle. I want curves where there is flatness and flatness where there are curves. But I choose to believe God and agree with Psalm 139:13-14: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

Well spoken. I hate how desensitized our culture is becoming. And we are truly the only nation in which beauty means perfection (as in magazine perfection, not God's perfection :), and it's sad. I'm glad you sent your opinion to bath and body!

very well said! It IS sad that these things are the "norm" for our kids today. they know no different. They don't know to be offended. The things my little first grade students find acceptable, b/c it IS acceptable in their own homes, is astounding sometimes. so sad!!! good for you for emailing the company!

B&B Works is really bad to put on your skin anyways...not to make light of the situation, just to make you feel better about missing out. I'm really glad to hear of you taking a stand.
On another note, your blog header makes me laugh because the lady ahead of you guys in the gray pants has the penultimate wedgie!!!!

Kelli, I KNOW!!! It's so gross!!! I always think, 'I hope people who don't know me who come to my blog don't think that's me.'
BBW hand soap and body cream have been always been the best for my excemic dry skin--any suggestions for what would be better? I'm thinking of replacing my wallflowers with Scentsy...

I went to the B&BW site to check it out because I haven't stepped foot in one of their stores in a long time and I hate to say it but I wasn't all that shocked by the image that they had there - though it might be different from the ones they have in the store. STILL, it is a sad commentary on what images I've been inundated with over the years and my acceptance of them.

I have really dry skin on my hands and I use the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. (All it takes is a tiny little dab) From there I've branched out to their Norwegian Formula body lotions and haven't been disappointed.

And Kelli, I never noticed that before - you're right, SUPER MAJOR WEDGIE! It looks painful.

You are sooo on the mark!!! It is hard to love every part of your body but it sure makes it easier when you realize that it came from God. Now... teaching that to our daughters might be more challenging.
