I'm married to a 42-year old man!

Yesterday was Mike's birthday. We surprised him at the BCM the night before with balloons and cupcakes, and as usual, couldn't wait to open presents, so we let him open them the night before, too.

Birthdays are milestones in our relationship. The first time I remember talking to him (he remembers others before, but that's another story) was at a surprise 25th birthday party my roommates, Karry and Beverly, gave me. He was the only one to give me a "nice" card. 4 months later he asked me out, and exactly 3 months after that we went on a date to celebrate his 27th birthday. We went out to eat, then went to Trinity Park (Ft. Worth) and sat on a bench, um, watching the water. I told him I hoped this was his happiest birthday ever, and he said, "You know what would make this my happiest birthday ever? If you would marry me!!" He caught me totally by surprise. So much so that I didn't even say yes! But 4 days later I did, and the next 15 years have been the best of my life.

Meet Annie

I'd like you to meet Rebecca's new friend, Annie.
I'd show you a picture, but I've never actually met (or seen!) her myself. Rebecca started talking about Annie a little before we moved. She'll say, "When I went to Silver Dollar City with my friend Annie, we rode the roller coaster." Or "I went to my friend Annie's house and watched TV and played with her ball and had snacks with her." They swim, and travel, and go to school. Annie is 1 year old. She looks like "princess and the beauty." She has orange hair and brown, blackish eyes. One day I asked how Annie was and Rebecca said she was dead, but the next day--she was alive again! Hopefully Annie will be a good influence on Rebecca, and not begin doing all the naughty things around our house...

One more Rebecca story--the other day I opened the back of our van (which we call "Ole Bessie") and she said, "That's Bessie's bahooky!" Oh my!

Blessings among the trials and chaos of life

I'm back! What a week it has been. A week ago today (the hottest day of the year, at 108) a moving van pulled up to our house in Conway. Mike stayed to watch the movers, and I put the 3 girls in the van and drove down to Magnolia. We had a good drive down, in spite of the fact that I wouldn't let them bring the portable DVD player! I had printed a list of travel questions from the Cranium website, and they answered them all, and sang and laughed, and acted like the hills on the 2-lane highway were roller coasters, and discovered heat wave mirages on the road. We drove straight to the schools, and got everyone registered and looked around a bit, checked in at our hotel, then went to our new house, where we discovered the air conditioner wasn't working. {H O T} We had to stick around for an hour while the bug man sprayed. While we were there I drained the water out of the cooler that had all our fridge food in it, then added a new bag of ice...discovered the next day that I forgot to close it back up. oops. Then we went to Pizza Hut for supper. I was sitting there thinking, man, I'm still hot. Then I noticed the air conditioner repair truck in the parking lot--I told the waitress sorry-but we're leaving. We went back to the hotel and ordered pizza to the nice cold room, then went swimming. Rebecca had her arm floaties on, and was in the shallow end, while I played "baby cradle" with Jessica in the deeper part, about 12 feet away. .
I looked at Jessica, then looked back at Rebecca, and she had her floaties off and was in water over her head, eyes wide open, flailing about. I got to her as quick as I could and pulled her up--she had held her breath the whole time! Praise the Lord. She wasn't nearly as upset as her sisters and I. She got right back in after that and played red light/green light with them. Sigh.

The next day the truck brought our furniture and boxes, and we got to start getting our house in order. It's always fun opening the boxes and unwrapping the paper to see what's in it. Some of the toys had been in boxes since we moved into a duplex in Idaho 19 months ago--it was like Christmas!
I've got all 3 girls' rooms box-free and set up now, and I think they look cute. I still need to finish our room and unpack a bunch of boxes of books. We have so many books. We had built-ins in Conway; I think we may need a new bookshelf.

Friday I got up and got the girls ready and went to the courthouse in the middle of the town square--my girls like living in a town that's like "back then"-- to register to vote (so I could have proof of residency for the school.) Then we got to go to Open House at each school and meet the teachers. The schools here decorate each class in a theme, like Disney, M & M's, teddy bears, under the sea...we were really interested to see where my girls ended up. Girly-girl Mikayla got the "sports room" and Jessica's teacher is new and didn't do a theme. Oh well. They were both very welcoming and nice, but as we drove away, I felt like crying. Just that mother-feeling: they-can't-really-be-in-2nd-and-4th-grade-can-they? And worrying about them being new, and making friends. So we went to get treats at Sonic to "celebrate".
Saturday I got Mike's cold, and of course it moved into my chest. But I used my inhaler and spent one night in a recliner and one with 2 pillows, and I'm feeling much better now. Sunday we visited Central Baptist, and everyone enjoyed it. God gave me a little hug that day--He knew how worried I've been about the girls starting a new school, and not even being together, for the first time...there were 3 second grade teachers in our Sunday School class. And they all asked who Mikayla got, and when I said, "Mrs. W-" they each said, "Glo! She'll love her." Made me feel good.
Monday morning I was still emotional, and more nervous than they were, but it went fine. We were told to just drop them off in front of the schools, and Mikayla just bounced out of the car and bopped down the sidewalk, brave as can be.
She told me that night she was so scared she almost cried. Jessica asked me to walk her in, so I did. After school Mikayla was happy, but Jessica was not. She's still not liking it. But we're hoping each day will get better.

Yesterday the air conditioner man came to replace the coils (whatever that means.) We had been cool the whole time, but it dripped and leaked, and part of the house deal was for the seller to fix it. So he was here about 3 hours, fixing it...a couple of hours later, it quit cooling. It was {H O T} again. I called him back, but he couldn't come out until today. We went to SAU campus for a BCM cookout, and when we came home 80 felt a lot cooler. Today the repair man came back and said it was a classic example of putting new wine in old wineskins, and the new coils caused the old condenser to overheat and now we needed a whole new unit. So Mike started calling the realtor and the seller and the repairman, and found out that the seller's insurance that should cover it takes forever to answer claims, and may not approve it at all. This afternoon at the exact moment I was praying for God to work out our a.c. situation, Mike called and said the insurance company called, approved it, and said the repair man would come today!! Yay! Thank You God! He is SO good to me.

When we were getting ready for the packers to come in Conway, I took this decoration off the wall.
It was dusty and faded and old. But my Mom and I had made a bunch of them to decorate for my wedding, after she saw them at a shop being sold as "blessings". I knew I needed to throw it away, but how could I throw away my wedding blessing? I took it outside to Mike, to ask his opinion, and he said it did look pretty bad. So I threw it away, but it hurt, and I miss seeing it in my new house. But looking back over the week, and looking around my new home, I see God's blessings in ways that will never get dusty or faded or old. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21)

My Crazy Life

Well, tonight is the last night I'll sleep in this house. We'll go home with my Mom after church tomorrow, leave the girls there and come over here to wash sheets and stuff, and the movers come Monday. (I haven't had "movers" since our last move with the Navy when I was 13!) They pack us up Monday and Tuesday, load the truck Wednesday, and unload in Magnolia on Thursday. If we go down Wed. in time to register the girls for school, they can meet their teachers on Friday before school starts Monday. And I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
So obviously we decided not to homeschool, at least not right now. I still have a desire to, but was fretting about it, and going back and forth, and Mike said, let's stick to our original plan and try the public school until they give us a reason not to. Aside from my thinking the curriculum I looked at looked like fun, our reasons for homeschooling were based on hearsay, and we decided that wasn't fair. So we're going to give it a quarter and go from there.
We really are buying the latest house we picked out! It almost didn't happen because of something on the inspection, but we worked it out, and we close on Thursday. Our house here, however...is not rented out after all. They changed their minds. So we're back to having 2 house payments. Yikes! My friend Ginger reminded me of Psalm 57:2 "I will cry to God Most High, to God who accomplishes all things for me." And Mike and I remind each other to breathe.
With so many obstacles and things not working out, we started to question again if we were even supposed to make this move. But each thing that would seem to make us turn back has happened because of someone not keeping their word, and if we changed our minds after 2 months, we wouldn't be keeping our word to the convention. And I don't think that's of God. So we're pressing on.
(breathe)
He's sick, by the way. Achy, sore throat, no energy. Not a good time for that...(breathe)
Did I mention this is our 7th move since we got married, and our 4th move in 20 months? (breathe)
Well, I'm going to find a box and pack some food and other stuff the movers won't do. Pray for us!
OH by the way--does anyone know a song with the phrase "it's Your approval I long for"? I keep singing that one phrase and can't remember the rest. It's driving me crazy!

Growing Up

My Jessica got her ears pierced AND a new haircut last week. She's so grown up I can hardly stand it.

Remember the...Cowboys

Women who don't watch football with their husbands don't know what they're missing. Now I know not all wives (or husbands for that matter) enjoy sports. But Mike and I have so much fun cheering for our teams (thankfully the Southwest Conference split years ago, and Arkansas and A&M haven't played each other since), and laughing at commercials, and being together. And ESPN's Kirk Herbstreet is one fine announcer.
Another perk is getting to witness moments like I did last night, when Michael Irvin was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. (Click here to watch a clip.) Wow. He stood up after Jerry Jones introduced him, visibly moved, and when he bowed his head, I thought he was trying to compose himself. Then he began, "Father, thank you for the love you have shown to me, and for my spiritual father, T.D. Jakes..." and went on to pray for the family of the man inducted before him, who had Alzheimers and was unable to speak, and closed his prayer in Jesus' name. He was openly repentant of his bad choices through the years, publicly apologizing to his wife and sons, and humble about his fears and shortcomings. It was very moving.
Now I know many celebrities claim to give glory to God and then live like the devil, and none of us can know for sure another's heart. And I know Michael Irvin could be in the headlines tomorrow on another drug charge. That's why our faith is in God and not people. But I also know that God is more than able to forgive and redeem Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, and even me. I'm so thankful to be saved, not by the God of second chances, but by the God of eternal forgiveness, for those who are washed in the blood of His Son.
Who knew football could be so inspiring?

Happy List Part 3

For the last 4 nights I've been unable to go to sleep until after midnight (and only one of those was due to a crying 3-year-old). It's as if when I put my head on the pillow someone throws a handful of bouncy balls inside my brain, and they bounce around for hours, until I take a couple of Tylenol and they finally slow down. So last night I lay there thinking of additions to my "happy list," which I suppose was my way of counting my blessings:

22. Playing in the rain

23. Flowers from my husband or kids--hand picked or store bought
24. Lightning bugs
25. New crayons, sharp yellow pencils, and smooth ball point pens
26. The deep, even breathing of my husband right before he starts to snore
27. Being remembered
28. Picking blackberries with my family, then making jelly with my Mom.

29. Ladies' Bible studies
30. Answered prayer (like our house renting!)
31. A good night's sleep
