Fun at the Fair

We went to Texarkana to the 4 States Fair yesterday. The carnival was good, but there were hardly any animals or exhibits, and it was sooo hot. It made me miss the Nez Perce County Fair in Lewiston. We went every year with Tim and Denise, adding kids as they came along. It would be warm in the sunlight, but we'd always need jackets or coats as the sun went down. (Nostalgic sigh)
But here are some pictures of the fun we had:
(The above picture was Rebecca's last ride, with our last tickets, and she had to ride by herself...she did not have fun on the fun slide.)
Passing out tickets
The famous dragon roller coaster--Jessica rode this with Andrew when they were little and was scared to death!

It's not quite a safari, but look, Rebecca, a zebra!
They didn't have this Superman-style ride when I was a kid, but it looks like fun!
There wasn't a good petting zoo, where you walk around with the animals, but they still loved petting them through the fence.

My little city girls, "milking a cow"?

This was a joke for my girls, who are in a "cheese club". They're saying, "Cheese!"

Our Weekend Adventure

For the 3rd week in a row, I had a busy, travel-out-of-town weekend. But this time my whole family went with me, which was good. We went to Houston, to visit Mike's family. Mike's Mom lives in a personal care home now, and the first thing we did Saturday was to visit her. She had been falling whenever she tried to walk, so they're having to belt her in to her chair, which makes us sad. But they are so sweet to her there, painting her nails and talking to her about us, helping her finish her meals. It is a huge blessing and ministry to us. She seemed to know who we were this time, not by name maybe, but her eyes looked like she recognized us, and she hugged us back.

That afternoon our niece Andrea joined us and we went to downtown Houston to the Children's Museum.

It was huge, with lots of things to do in many different areas. One area got them exercising, several were kind of science-y (see Rebecca dancing to make the lights dance on the wall?)

but their favorite activities were all in "Kidtropolis," a pretend city. It had a bank, stock exchange, town hall, art academy, grocery store, etc.

Jessica's favorite thing was the TV station, where they got to film themselves doing the news and then watch themselves!
(random little boy)
Mikayla loved being a vet,

and Rebecca had fun in the diner.

They even had things outside, like baby chicks (Rebecca took this picture)
and a water area--we all loved that, too.

We had a lot of fun, but it wore us out. But it didn't wear us out so much we couldn't eat Double Dave's pepperoni rolls and play 10,000! We went home the next day, and...had a flat tire just outside of Minden, Louisiana. Mike pulled over and I was helping him with the spare when I felt the fire ants start biting--we had put the car mats and spare tire right on their nest. I only got bit 3 times, but I hate those things. We tried to get the tire fixed at the Minden Walmart, but they said it was unfixable, so we drove another hour on the spare and made it home. Bought a new tire yesterday, and now we've lost the hub cap! Aargh. I'm thankful it's just things.

Beauty from Ashes

This news story brought tears to my eyes, but not of sadness this time. More of amazement at our loving God, and how He causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (BTW, there's a video/slideshow on this article that sums it up beautifully.)
In 10 years since Wedgwood Baptist shootings, gunman's brother has found forgiveness at the chur...

And here's another video, that did make me cry sad tears of remembrance, but that's okay, too. God catches them for me, too, and has healed so many hurts.

Me and My Girl

Jessica and I went to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, on Friday, with her friends Macye and Katie, and their Mom/my friend Rebecca. It was about a 5 1/2 hour drive, but it went really fast because of all our chattering. We met Rebecca's sister and her little girl there, checked in to our hotel,

then went to eat and to the mall!

Oh, the silliness! We didn't stay out too late, knowing we had the Vicki Courtney conference (You and Your Girl) the next day. Here we are at the church.

It was a great time--we all got to hear Vicki speak about guarding our hearts, then the girls split up into age groups and the moms got to listen to Vicki some more. Jessica loved her break-out leader; she was a crazy-fun newlywed. After lunch we got to meet Vicki and tell her how disappointed we were in the slide of her family doing an obscene gesture (hook 'em, horns--shudder). It was so fun to meet her, after reading her blog and books!
There were several other authors and speakers there, and Lifeway had tables set up, but I had to have money for a couple more meals, so I wrote down a lot of titles for later. I did buy this for Jessica when she asked, though--how do you turn down a request for a Bible study?? And I found a few bargains.
There was a "talk show" in the afternoon, and more break-outs and more Vicki. We closed with a special time of commitment where we got to give our daughters blue bracelets that say Proverbs 4:23, and worship music by the Sonflowerz. We had a good time, and heard some good things. It was also good to have time to talk to Jessica with just the two of us.
That night Mike and Nate Lowry picked us up and took us to their house for supper! I haven't seen Mike since they left Idaho, what, five years ago? No, I think it's six! It was good to get to talk to him. Poor Margo is recovering from tonilitis, but had us over anyway, and I loved seeing all six of them, and catching up, and talking about home school stuff, and hearing Margo play & sing her latest scripture she's put to music. Now I'm praying she gets better soon and EATS!

We slept in the next day, then left to come home. It was so good to see the rest of my family again. We're going away this coming weekend, too, and then hopefully I can stay home for a while!

10 on the Tenth, in honor of the 10th

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the tragedy at Wedgwood Baptist Church on September 15, here are 10 of my favorite Wedgwood memories:

1. Sharing an apartment with Susan We shopped, cooked, and ate together, decorated for Christmas, and shared teaching stories with laughter and tears.

2. The first time I visited Wedgwood Susan and I picked it out of the phone book. I walked into the singles’ Sunday School class and sat by Amy, who became a dear friend. She was sitting by David Mikkelson, who taught at my school, and he was by Becca Lechner, Charlie’s sister, whom I had met that summer at Charlie and Angie’s wedding. No wonder I felt at home from the start!
3. Mission trip to Indio, California–visiting the oasis, getting to know Amy and Karry better (didn’t we learn a LOT! Ha!), making lemonade with the biggest lemons I’ve ever seen in my life, pounding nails (including my own), inside jokes like “I’ve been working with clamps all day!” We wrote our names and Bible verses on the boards before we left. (Not-so-favorite memory: I got si-i-i-ick on the way home. Blech.)
{Once again, blogger is messing up the orientation of my pictures. Aargh.}

4. Singing in the choir I always sat with Jaynanne, Sydney, and Glynda, and they always kept me on the right notes, laughing, and in trouble with Sam Jones. I especially loved the night I went in with an engagement ring on my finger, and they all screamed and were excited for me. That was so much fun.
5. The first time I laid eyes on Mike Sandusky I had lived in Fort Worth for two years, and was starting my 3rd year of teaching at Como. Susan had gotten married that summer, so I had moved into a duplex with Karry and Beverly (two more excellent roommates!).

Bro. Al was introducing new members, and he said, “This is Mike Sandusky, and he came a long way to join Wedgwood–all the way from Moscow! Idaho.” I got interested thinking he was Russian, then forgot about him until the next spring.

6. Square dancing Once a year or so the singles would have a hoe-down, with a caller who taught us what to do. I loved it! Once John Espinoza was my partner and I lost him and needed him to “promenade,” so I yelled, “I need a man!” which made everyone laugh. The best one was after Mike and I started dating, and we each won a drawing, separately, with money (like a buck or so) for a date if we asked them out right then. We asked each other...awww. We also used to get groups together and go country/western dancing at Nine Acres. That’s where Mike swept me off my feet. He kept asking me to dance over and over, and I started falling for him. I remember thinking, “Even my brothers would like him.”
7. One Wednesday night, Mike sat by me at prayer meeting When it was over, he asked me on a date!! I casually said sure, but after he walked out I started jumping up and down, and Susan’s brother Richard–or maybe it was his wife–said, “Be careful, that kind of excitement will get you married.” A year later, we were!

8. Sunday School announcements, starring Rob, Sydney, Marcie, Robbie, Paul, Brett–oh, they were all so funny! I remember the Secret Service men guarding the president at a press conference, and football officials using their little belt mikes.

9. Friday morning prayer, and breakfast afterwards at Denny’s or Ihop. I had made a promise to myself that if I didn’t go to Wednesday night church, I had to go on Friday–at 6:00 a.m.!! Funny thing is, it was such a special time I ended up going to both.
10. Vacation Bible School Wedgwood did themes with their VBS before Lifeway thought of it. We decorated the rooms, and had a carnival on the last day. The last one I did, Mike was flirting with me in the break room and in the halls–all my married friends were talking about us. I was in the dunking booth at the carnival, and his ball missed so he cheated and ran up & dunked me!

I hate stopping at 10! I haven’t mentioned SNACs at the Osieks’,

or Howdy Parties, retreats (that would lead to my most embarrassing moment),

hanging out at the office because my roomie was a secretary, Six Flags season passes, picnics at Guy Ranch or Trinity Park or the Botanic Gardens, those nights with set-up dates (what were they called?), Ranger games, the 70's party, the mission trip to Bland, WV,

or the mission stay, when we helped build the new sanctuary, my lingerie party where I got a toaster,

or our amazing year in the young married S.S. class.

We had some good times. And some bad times. But you know what? We were family. And as Bro. Al would say: Once a Wedgie, always a Wedgie!
